Chris Burnham
located in Chicago, IL
natured & nurtured by Robert & Gretchen Burnham
When I'm freshly shaven, I get carded every time. When I've got a beard, I get offered the senior citizen discount. Who needs Ponce de Leon when you've got Ferdinand du Gillette?
In other news, I draw pictures for a living, I can say the alphabet backwards faster than you can say it forwards, and I have never worked in food service. I think the rest is self-explanatory.
Oh, if you're so inclined, follow me on Twitter and Facebook, where I say offensive things for my own amusement. I had a great beastiality bit the other day. Look out , jungle cats!

Update
Yikes! I haven't updated this site in a year. Sorry, kids! I've put out a bunch of spiffy comics in the last 12 months, including Batman Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes, The Officer Downe: Bigger Better Bastard Edition, and the first three issues of the rebooted Batman Incorporated. Oh! And the hardcover collection of Batman Inc #s 1-10 was the #1 New York Times Bestseller in the Hardcover Graphic Novel category! Not too shabby!
AND on September 26th, my first paid writing gig comes out, Batman Incorporated #0, which I co-wrote with our very own Grant Morrison!
|
Batman Incorporated #7
Yowza! I thought the reviews for #s 4 and 6 were great, but they were nothing compared with those for #7. This issue really clicked with people in a way I quite honestly wasn't expecting. I certainly thought we did a pretty good job, but I had no idea people would respond so positively to a Batman comic where Batman appears in, what, 10 panels? Craziness.

Batman Incorporated #6
This issue took it out of me. So many characters in so many locations, capped off with a double-page spread that takes place simultaneously in eight different countries. Easily the hardest thing I've ever had the opportunity to draw.
Anyhow, people seemed to like it. Hard work pays off, kids!

Batman Incorporated #4
Man. Who knew Internet could be so nice? I was really expecting a whole lot more "this guy is certainly no Yanick Paquete" or "talk about a poor man's Frank Quitely" or "my kid could draw this... and I bit off his fingers years ago," but the vast majority of the reviews of the book have been very kind, and some have been downright frightening with their praise. Calm down, folks. It's just a comic!
Anyhow, here's a sampling of what they're saying. There's about a bazillion more reviews out there, and I'm certainly self-obsessed enough to have read every last one of them. Thanks, Google Alerts! You've really taken the effort out of narcissism. The world is my mirror!

DC Exclusive!!!
Yowza! Apparently when DC said they liked my stuff they really weren't blowing smoke up the ol' keister, because they offered me a TWO YEAR EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT! And after mulling it over at least 12 nanoseconds, I accepted!
"What's that mean?" you ask? It means DC is guaranteeing me X number of issues a year for the next 2 years... and that means that it's goodbye Top Ramen, hello Kraft Macaroni & Cheese!
It's super exciting & gratifying to know that I'll be spending the next two years drawing people in preposterous outfits beating the ever-loving tar out of each other!
|
Batman Incorporated!!!
Wow. Just... wow.
Even more amazing than the public response to my scribbles on Batman & Robin were Grant Morrison and DC editorial's responses. Not only did they love it, but they asked me to come on board for three issues of Grant's followup to Batman & Robin, BATMAN INCORPORATED!!!
I'll be drawing issues 4, 6, and 7, and although I can't give you specifics, I can say that these are by far the most insanely challenging scripts I've ever had the opportunity to draw. Seriously, in these issues the $#!% hits the fan, the fan hits the wall, and the wall hits a nuclear bomb,
One of the high points of drawing the book is getting the opportunity to work with one of the most talented colorists (and one of my best friends) in the business, Nathan Fairbairn. We hadn't gotten the chance to work together in years, but we've picked right back up where we left off. I can't wait for you guys to see what we've cooked up for you.
Of course, every opportunity comes with a sacrifice, and in order to draw Batman full time I had to stop drawing The Amory Wars. Amory was my first opportunity at really drawing comics as a full-time living, and quitting the book was easily the hardest decision I've ever made. The decision was made a little easier by knowing that I've left the book in the very talented hands of my good buddy Aaron Kuder. I hope you'll all continue to follow the book when Aaron takes over, starting with Amory #8, and that you'll all follow me on to the next stage of my career with Batman Inc #4!
|
Batman and Robin #16!!!!
Hoe. Lee. $#@!
I drew 7 pages in Batman & Robin #16, Grant Morrison's grand finale to the series, and the conclusion to 3 years of Batman storylines.
It was daunting and exhilarating for my first DC book ever to be such a high profile book... written by one of my favorite writers, starring one of my favorite characters, and featuring art and colors by some of my favorite talents in the business - Cameron Stewart, Frazer Irving, and Alex Sinclair.
I thought I held my own pretty well... but the response from critics & reviewers absolutely blew me away. Here's a little sampling...

24-Hour Comic Day 2010:
SNAKE PUNCH!!!!
Third time's the charm, baby! From 10am on October 2nd to 8:18am October 3rd, I wrote, drew and lettered a 24-page comic that is more jam-packed with madness then anything else I've ever attempted. It's another strange journey into my id, but surprisingly enough, this time there's only one curse word and NO nudity!!! Not surprisingly, there's a fairly gross shot of a guy cut in half. And some talk of cannibalism. Steak's good. Chicken's good. Fish's good. I'll betcha people's good, too.
Read Snake Punch in all its glory HERE, and if you're inclined to read a couple paragraphs of me pontificating about its creation, head on over HERE! and scroll down to the bottom. Enjoy!

Officer Downe Original Art Contest! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
Wow. Congratulations to @TheHeape, who got all 11 trivia questions correct. His prize is any single page of original artwork from Officer Downe. It's a little like giving away one of my babies, but a deal's a deal! I had a great time putting this thing together... next time I'm gonna make the questions even harder!!!
So at long last, here are the questions, answers, and a brief explanation where necessary.
1 - What do the Scrabble tiles on the cover spell?
Quixotic.
2 - Whose mop is that stuck in Jason's eye on the back cover?
The Toxic Avenger's
3 - What's that weird trashcan thing on the back cover?
One of the drums from Return of the Living Dead
4 - Who are those guys standing next to Officer Downe in the first flashback panel?
Ponch & John from CHiPs!
5 - The warden at the end looks VERY similar to the warden in what other Burnham-drawn comic? (Hint - you're on my webpage right now... explore!)
Boston Blackie: Inside Out.
6 - Name the three characters from Nixon's Pals that appear in Officer Downe. (Hint - the guy with the toothpick and the scar on his nose doesn't count since he was never named in Nixon's Pals... but his name is Vito Scarpirelli. 'Cuz everyone in his family has a scar on their face. Get it? SCARpirelli? Right? Ah, the hell with you.)
Nixon Cooper, Double J (the short guy with pock-marked skin and corn rows), and Rambles (the guy with the twisted face)
7 - In the big 31-panel double-page spread towards the end of the book, one panel is swiped from Avengers #274, the comic that got me hooked. Which panel is it?
The one on the bottom left. Check it out!
8 - The big prison is a halfway decent example of what style of architecture? (Hint - the prison is made of concrete)
Brutalism
9 - What is that artwork hanging in the warden's office? Here's a link to one of the pages in question, without alla the word balloons covering up my trivial background details. (Hint - I've drawn pieces from this book of illustrations in the background of almost every comic I've worked on over the past 6 or 7 years. Marvel Mystery, Nixon's Pals, Days Missing #2, Elephantmen #16, Boston Blackie, Amory Wars #1... and probably more)
They're Gustave Dore's illustrations for Dante's Inferno
10 - What's the deal with the license plate on the car at the end?
The Never Dead was the Australian title for Phantasm, a totally bitchin' horror movie that prominently features a black Hemi Cuda.
11 - Zen Master Flash's bracelet has the initials WWKD on it... what does it stand for and how do you know? What Would Kenshiro Do? 'Cuz Kenshiro exercises the same way.
And that's it!

It's a good one! Spaceships, lightning, sea monsters, cyborgs, and murder! What else could you possibly want out of life? Oh, right, nudity. Umm... there's some halfway decent cleavage.. does that count?

The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 #1!
Man, that is one unwieldy title. It's commonly abbreviated as The Amory Wars: IKSSE3, but from here on out I'm just going to call it The Amory Wars volume 3.
Anyhow, I drew it, Zac Atkinson colored it, Peter David wrote it, Claudio Sanchez created it, and I hope you like it! Check it out!
|
Officer Downe!
My Nixon's Pals co-conspirator Joe Casey and I have put the band back together... and this time we've come up with Officer Downe. It's gonna make Robocop look like Robocop 3, Toxic Avenger look like Toxic Crusaders, and Judge Dredd (the comic) look like Judge Dredd (the movie).
This 48-page one-shot features the greatest art of my career and the greatest opening caption in the history of comics. And it only gets better from there.
This bad boy hits the stands in mid-July. Read more about it at Newsarama, CBR, and Bleeding Cool!
If you read the comments in Bleeding Cool, someone was nice enough to mistake me for Frank Quitely. My work here is done. Thanks, Internet!

The Amory Wars! (That's AMORY, not aRmory.)
A couple of months back, I was bemoaning the fact that for the past few years I've been drawing stories between 3 and 23 pages long, and haven't gotten a chance to work on something long term.
Enter Boom Studios, Peter David, Coheed & Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez, and the 12-issue series The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. I get to spend the next year of my life drawing the most mind-boggling tale of spaceships, monsters, angels, planetary overlords, super powers, heartbreak, regret , & revenge that's ever been made into a series of concept albums and adapted into comic books. That's not opinion, friends. That's a goldarned fact!
The first issue comes out at the end of May... if all goes as planned, another should come out every month for the next year straight!
|
Elephantmen #25
This comic is insane. A 25-page story told in 25 splash pages by 25 different art teams. The likes of Dave (Watchmen) Gibbons, Tim (Heroes) Sale, Brandon (King City) Graham, David (Strange Embrace) Hine, Paul (Jack Staff) Grist, and lil' ol' me! And I hung in there pretty well. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that talented youngster Aaron Kuder did a lot of the heavy lifting on our page by inking over my nearly incomprehensible layout sketch. Those Rohrschach inkblot tests have nothing on my preliminary drawings. Anyhow, buy it!
|
Elephantmen #s 23 and 24
Somehow or other I seem to have found myself as the semi-official artist of The Silencer, Mystery City's resident assassin-for-hire and my favorite character in The Elephantmen. I drew a story featuring him in #9, the story that launched my career, and in #16, my first 22 (okay, 23) page comic. And here I am again drawing him killing someone else in the epilog to issue 23. Issue 16 was the prelude to the Dangerous Liaisons story arc that ran from 16-23, so there's a nice symmetry in getting to do the epilog as well.
Issue 24 features a backup story starring the guy that old Silent-But-Deadly killed in the epilog to 23. How can a dead guy be the star of the story? Sounds like you need to plunk down your 3 bucks and find out, buddy.

24-Hour Comic Day 2009
Oh, snap. If you thought the last one didn't make any sense, wait'll you see what I did this time. It's called Monster Truck, it took me 21 hours and 7 minutes to complete, and it's another frighteningly bizarre window into my own personal id. This time it's surprisingly genital-free, but there are enough curses and euphemisms to make the MPAA give me an R. Maybe next year I'll make something for the kids... or maybe it'll be profane enough that if I ever go back to Texas they'll give me the chair. Start holding your breath for the next 11 months... NOW!!

Marvel Mystery Comics 70th Anniversary Special #1
If I do say so myself, this comic has a greater percentage of punching, flying, flame-throwing, and all-out destructive action than anything else I've ever drawn, and probably anything else on the shelves today. Heehee" (translation: SHIT! I wish I could read so I could devour every last page of this masterpiece!) and has my mom saying "Christopher, I thought we raised you better than this!"
Nixon's Pals is about a parole officer for supervillains and is the greatest work to date from both me and my esteemed colleague, Joe Casey. And considering that this is a guy who has written Superman, X-Men, WildC.A.T.S. 3.0, and G0DLAND, that's saying a whole hell of a lot!
If you like your triumph mixed with tragedy, your street-level intrigue mixed with super-powered violence, and your breasts mixed with eyepatches and Roy-Tan cigars, then Nixon's Pals is your new reason for living! It's 120 pages of non-stop brilliance for just $12.99. Call up your local comic book shop and order Nixon's Pals today!

24-Hour Comicbook
In October of 2007, I was present for the world's first 24-Hour Comic Podcast. The Crankcast joined forces with AroundComics to talk about comics, movies, porn, and whatever else came to mind. I sat in a corner and created a 24-Hour-Comic Book... that's Scott McCloud's challenge to write, pencil, ink and letter a 24-page comic in 24 hours! Check mine out HERE! Beware, there's bad words and naughty bits.
